This class is BYOB

Create a one-of-a-kind ornament just in time for the holidays in this DIY Pet Portrait Embroidery class! Suitable for beginners and experienced embroiderers alike, embroidery is a lovely way to relax and create something beautiful with your hands.

In this workshop, master embroidery artist Hannah Lamar will teach you basic embroidery techniques as you create an intricate, one-of-a-kind 3” linework/outline portrait of your beloved pet. You will receive a DIY embroidery kit including a custom pattern designed by Hannah and pre-printed on 100% cotton fabric mounted in a high-quality beechwood embroidery hoop, peacock embroidery scissors, needles, thread, hemp cord to hang your ornament, and a band-aid - just in case!

You will learn basic embroidery stitches, how to finish your hoop and some of Hannah's favorite tips and techniques for intricate and small linework embroidery. This is a great opportunity to learn a new craft or a rewarding hobby with expert support as you get started!

You will leave the workshop with your project well underway and take home a digital pattern guide and stitch-style library with links to video tutorials should you need refreshers as you complete your masterpiece at home.

After registering, Hannah will be in touch via email to collect reference photos for your project. You'll need to have 1-3 clear photos of your pet's face - see the Reference Photo Guide for tips on choosing the best photo!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Hannah Lamar is a self-taught embroidery artist specializing in custom pet portrait thread painting.   Hannah lives in Queens and West Shokan, NY with her husband, two kids, and dogs Steve and Bongo. She first learned embroidery from her mother, grandmother, and at the Appalachian Arts Center in Clinton TN. Hannah graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BFA in mixed media, and received a master’s degree in Occupational therapy, which emphasizes the importance of doing meaningful activities for our health and well being. Hannah believes that, in an increasingly virtual and disconnected world, making things with our hands is more important than ever.

After her first son was born, Hannah embroidered a portrait of her dog Steve on a denim jacket as a way to make something for herself. She spent the next several years becoming a master at embroidering pet portraits. Hannah uses a single strand of thread to capture the movement and texture of fur like no other medium can. Embroidery projects force us to slow down, be patient, and fall in love with the process. Embroidering a beloved pet, especially if they have passed, is a beautiful way to spend time with them and feel close to their memory. Hannah has developed DIY embroidery kits and workshops to share her love of embroidery with children and adults alike!
